Because lavish dress could divert household resources, simple dress indicated self-control. It expressed wise judgment about the use of communal resources. At the heart of the ideal is the notion of self-discipline for the public good. Both men and women could display this virtue through their attire.

The philosopher Plutarch said this of the importance of modest dress for women: “What adorns a woman is what makes her better ordered—not gold nor emerald nor scarlet, but whatever gives an impression of dignity, discipline, and modesty.”³ For Plutarch and others of his time, being simply dressed meant one was adorned with virtue rather than riches.
